In a wonderful reversal that is both unexpected and almost unprecedented, a neglected low-rise subsidized housing project in Riverdale was transformed into a working neighborhood again through the dedicated efforts of both local government and focused design professionals. The redevelopment process, which began with a Technical Assistance Panel of stakeholders in 2003, resulted in 90 historic townhouses being restored and rehabilitated and two new mixed-use buildings, all providing housing opportunities for low- to moderate-income families. The project also included infrastructure improvements and the creation of much-needed commercial space. The power of the original site plan, which consisted of a single tree-lined street, was recognized and sensitively expanded to include new units as an ntry experience accompanied by sustainable water management features that enhance the existing lan. Thoughtful elements like cantilevered street lights show the design team’s integration of cost-effective design with a focus on residents’ experience of the space. Restoration of the original buildings was meticulously observed, again realizing the accomplishment of the original architecture. Landscaping was restored with a similar determination resulting in the rebirth of a beloved neighborhood. For their commitment to meeting community needs, preserving historic structures and creating a sustainable development, Farr Associates and Whistler Crossing are this year’s Second Place winner of the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Award for Architectural Excellence in Community Design.
