One of the most diverse communities in Chicago, Albany Park has a multitude of ethnic restaurants, cultural institutions and places to shop. The one thing it does not have is enough affordable rental housing. To address this critical shortage, community leaders connected with the Evergreen Real Estate Group, developer of a number of outstanding properties in the area. Working together, along with architect and community leader, Jaime Torres Carmona of Canopy/Architecture + Design, they developed a plan for Oso apartments. Oso offers homes for singles and families. Its five-story structure, located on Montrose Avenue with the North Branch of the Chicago River as its east and north boundaries, complements surrounding structures while distinguishing itself through its vibrant use of color, materials and art. Constructed with pre-formed concrete and steel beams, the handsome building conveys strength, with bright yellow sunscreens and Juliet balconies that help heat and cool. Communicating the relationship between the building, the residents, the community and nature is a mural, Community Diligence, by Chicago artist Miguel A. Del Real. This unifying element connects the interior and exterior lobby gathering spaces and reinforces the statement about the power of community.
