North Side Housing and Supportive Services (NSHSS) operates non-congregate shelter that offers private, home-like spaces for people experiencing homelessness. The shelter, which houses 70 residents, was funded with support from the City of Chicago. It offers 24/7 services, including a commercial kitchen, laundry facilities, and healthcare, supporting residents on their path to stability and independence. The building, originally constructed as a doctor’s office, has had a radical transformation into a welcoming space done with care and intention. Every detail—from the two-bed shared rooms that provide more privacy, to the natural light incorporated through skylights and large windows, to the use of calming, thoughtful colors and soft curved architectural features— reflects the belief that a shelter should be a place of healing. NHSS has set a new standard for shelter design.
